The installation depicts a spiral shaped photographic journey
based upon the Fibonacci numeric sequence.
Fibonacci was a Medieval mathematician and businessman who
posed the following question: How many pairs of rabbits will
be produced in a year, beginning with a single pair, if in
every month each pair bears a new pair that becomes
productive from the second month on?
One pair is produced in the first month, and another pair is
produced in the second month. The third month then produces
2 pairs, one by the original pair and one by the now mature pair
produced in the first month. The fourth month produces 3 pairs,
and the fifth month 5 pairs, and so on. The sequence of numbers
is: 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89, 144, 233 . . .
The process of creating the spiral consists of my taking 1 step
to the north in the center of the room and taking 1 photograph
from that vantage point. Then, following the sequence, I take 1 step west and shoot 1 photograph from that viewpoint. Next, I
take 2 steps to the south and shoot 2 photographs, 3 steps
to the east and shoot 3 photographs, 5 steps to the north and
shoot 5 photographs and so on.
The photographs taken from this series of steps are assembled
together in this spiral sequence and installed to follow the
architecture of the gallery. The photographic structure fills the
room, both echoing and fragmenting the existing space.
Expanding out from my personal perspective into the larger
environment, the installation recreates a visual pathway
incorporating the immediate structures of the gallery with the
surrounding area of the Rockland Center.
