Process

A basic component of my process involves discovering a pattern that connects discrete elements and enables the creation of a larger unified whole. This echoes how living cells grow and aggregate over time with other cells to enable the emergence of complex organisms. Cutting bending twisting strands of wire… one component connecting with another… long hours of detailed repetitive processes become meditative, even hypnotizing.

The boundaries between a spiritual practice –meditation, contemplation, revelation– and artistic creation, dissolve.

Communicating an artistic process is never a straightforward journey. I trust these videos help to bridge any gaps between the numinous and tangible, the intellectual and kinesthetic.

Elizabeth is a painter and sculptor. Her work is inspired by the patterns formed in nature. These repeated patterns are in everything, from leaves to viruses. She was first introduced to these patterns by her father, a Nobel Prize-winning chemist. A special connection between the two of them was molded in nature and continues to be felt after his death. In the days of COVID-19 this, I hope, can be a reminder that even when someone has passed something remains. Science and art can show us this.

This film follows conversations between Elizabeth Knowles and Writer/Director Skylar Knutzen over three years. They often spoke about death and where humanity is headed, which coincided with the COVID-19 shut down in New York City.
